Italy and Switzerland in One Trip: Rome, Florence, Venice, Lucerne and the Jungfraujoch

Photos in this guide are AI-generated images of fictional POPORO CITY characters, made to illustrate the places; they are not real travel photos. Opening hours, prices and transport details change, so please check official sources before you go.

Italy and Switzerland are a classic pairing: ancient cities, Renaissance art and canals in Italy, then lakes and snowy peaks just across the Alps. Many package tours from Korea fly into Rome and out of Zurich or Milan, covering both countries in nine or ten days.

Rome

The Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill share one ticket and need advance booking for a time slot; guided tours of the arena floor or underground areas sell out. The Vatican Museums and St Peter's Basilica need another half day. Evenings are for the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. Southern day trips reach Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.

Florence

Florence is compact and walkable. The Duomo, Giotto's bell tower and the Uffizi Gallery are the headline sights; climbing the dome needs a reservation. For sunset, walk or take a bus up to Piazzale Michelangelo for the view over the river Arno and the Ponte Vecchio. Tuscan steak and gelato are must-tries.

Venice

Venice is best seen early in the morning or late in the evening, when day-trippers leave. St Mark's Square, the basilica and the Doge's Palace sit together; the Bridge of Sighs connects the palace to the old prison. Vaporetto water buses replace cars; gondolas are pricey but memorable. Check whether a day-visitor access fee applies on your date.

Lucerne

Lucerne is the gateway to central Switzerland, with its wooden Chapel Bridge, the lake and mountains such as Pilatus and Rigi close by. It is a gentle first stop after Italy.

Interlaken and the Jungfraujoch

From Interlaken, trains climb through Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen to the Jungfraujoch, the high saddle between the Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. The Eiger Express gondola shortens the trip. At the top there is an ice palace, a snow plateau and the Sphinx observatory looking over the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps.

Weather decides everything up here: check the live webcams before you go, bring sunglasses and warm layers even in summer, and take it slowly because of the altitude.

Routes and transport

  • High-speed trains link Rome, Florence and Venice in a few hours each.
  • From Milan, trains cross into Switzerland; a Swiss Travel Pass can cover many Swiss trains, boats and buses, while high mountain railways are usually discounted rather than free.
  • Book museum and Colosseum time slots well in advance.

Seasons

Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spot. In November Italian cities are quieter and mild, while high Swiss areas already have snow; some mountain lifts close for maintenance between seasons, so check dates.

Nearby places worth adding

  • Pisa and Lucca: the Leaning Tower and a walled town you can cycle around, both easy from Florence.
  • Burano: the island of brightly painted houses and lace, by water bus from Venice.
  • Lake Como: villas and ferries between lakeside villages, about an hour from Milan.
  • Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald: waterfall valley and alpine village with easy walks below the Eiger.
  • Mt. Pilatus or Rigi: cogwheel railways above Lake Lucerne for a lower, cheaper alternative to the Jungfraujoch.

Where to stay

Near Roma Termini and Firenze Santa Maria Novella for train access; in Venice, a night on the island itself is worth it for the empty evening lanes; in Switzerland, Interlaken or Grindelwald for the mountains.

POPORO picks

Ceno, an event planner from Italy, would time Florence for sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo; Juno, a singer from the UK, would take the boat to colorful Burano; and Cota, a photographer from New Zealand, would wait for clear weather to shoot the Aletsch Glacier.
