Nami Island Day Trip from Seoul: How to Get There and When to Go

Short answer: Nami Island is an easy day trip from Seoul. Take the ITX-Cheongchun train or the Gyeongchun Line to Gapyeong Station, hop in a short taxi or the Gapyeong tour bus to the wharf, and ride the ferry (included in the admission ticket) across the river. Plan on about half a day for the island itself. Go in autumn for the most colourful trees, or in winter for snow. Arrive early and skip weekends if you can.

What is Nami Island?

Nami Island (Namiseom) is a small, half-moon-shaped island in the North Han River near Gapyeong, northeast of Seoul. It is best known for its tree-lined avenues of metasequoia, ginkgo and pine, its relaxed riverside paths, and its role as a filming location for the classic Korean drama Winter Sonata. The island brands itself as the "Naminara Republic", a playful mini-nation, so your entry ticket is presented like a visa.

It is not a wild nature reserve. It is a landscaped park with cafes, restaurants, art spaces, bike rentals and plenty of photo spots. Knowing that helps you set the right expectations.

How to get to Nami Island from Seoul

Option 1: ITX-Cheongchun train (fastest by rail)

The ITX-Cheongchun runs from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni stations in Seoul to Gapyeong Station, taking roughly an hour. It has reserved seats, so book ahead on weekends and in autumn through Korail. From Gapyeong Station it is a short taxi ride to the Nami Island wharf.

Option 2: Gyeongchun Line (cheapest, most flexible)

The Gyeongchun Line is a commuter line you can ride with a regular transport card, no booking needed. It is slower than the ITX and you may need to change trains to reach it, but it is good value. If you do not have a card yet, read our T-money card guide first.

From Gapyeong Station to the wharf

  • Taxi: the quickest choice, especially for two to four people. Taxis usually wait outside the station.
  • Gapyeong City Tour Bus: a hop-on, hop-off bus that links Gapyeong Station with Nami Island and other local sights like Petite France and the Garden of Morning Calm. Check the official Gapyeong tourism site for the current route and schedule.
  • Walking: possible, but it takes a while along the road. Most visitors take a taxi or the bus.

Option 3: Direct shuttle bus

Private shuttle buses run from central Seoul (for example Myeongdong) straight to the Nami Island wharf. They save you the train-to-taxi transfer but usually need advance booking and have fixed departure times.

Option 4: A combined day tour

If you want to see several places in one day without working out transport, a group tour is the easiest route. A popular combination is Nami Island, the Garden of Morning Calm and the Gangchon Rail Bike, which are hard to link by public transport in one day. You can book a Nami Island, Garden of Morning Calm and rail bike tour on KKday. Our earlier Nami Island day tour guide covers what these tours typically include.

Crossing to the island: ferry or zip wire

Buy your admission ticket at the wharf on the mainland side. The ferry ride takes only a few minutes and is included in the admission price. Ferries run frequently during the day, but check the last return ferry time at the ticket office, especially in winter.

For a more dramatic arrival, a zip wire runs from a tower near the wharf to the island. It is a separate ticket, has weight and age rules, and can sell out on busy days. Admission prices and the zip wire fee change from time to time, so check the official Nami Island website before you go.

Best season to visit

Autumn (mid-October to early November)

This is the most popular time. The ginkgo trees turn bright yellow and the metasequoia lane goes rusty red. It is also the most crowded period, so go on a weekday and arrive early.

Winter (December to February)

Snow on the tree lanes gives the island its famous Winter Sonata look. It gets very cold by the river, so dress in layers. Winter is a good time to pair Nami with the Garden of Morning Calm's evening lights.

Spring (April to May)

Fresh green leaves, flowers and mild weather make it pleasant and less hectic than autumn.

Summer (June to August)

Lush and green, but hot and humid, with the rainy season in early summer. Bring water and sun protection.

What to do on the island

  • Walk the tree lanes: the metasequoia lane and the ginkgo lane are the classic photo spots.
  • Rent a bike: bicycles and tandems are available on the island and make it easy to reach the quieter riverside paths.
  • Look for wildlife: you may see squirrels, rabbits and birds roaming the park.
  • Take a break: there are cafes and restaurants, including dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken), a speciality of the wider Chuncheon area.

What to skip (or not overplan)

  • Weekend midday arrivals: queues for the ferry and ticket office can be long. Weekday mornings are calmer.
  • Cramming in too many stops: Nami, Petite France, the rail bike and the Garden of Morning Calm all in one day by public transport is exhausting. Pick two, or let a tour handle the logistics.
  • Spending too long near the entrance: the area by the ferry dock is busiest. Walk 10 to 15 minutes further in for quieter paths.
  • Expecting deep nature: if you want proper hiking, a mountain trail in Seoul or Seoraksan will suit you better.

LUMI from POPORO CITY says: "Bring headphones for the train ride. Autumn leaves out the window plus a slow song is the best start to a day trip."

Quick tips

  • Book ITX seats ahead in autumn and on weekends.
  • Check the last return ferry time as soon as you arrive.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; you will walk a lot even with a bike.
  • In winter, pack gloves, a hat and warm layers; the river wind is strong.
  • Combine with Seoul sights the next day using our Seoul late autumn and winter guide.

FAQ

How long should I spend on Nami Island?

Two to four hours on the island is enough for most visitors. Including travel from Seoul, plan for a half day to a full day.

Is the ferry included in the ticket?

Yes, the standard admission ticket includes the round-trip ferry. The zip wire is a separate ticket.

Usually from mid-October to early November, but timing shifts each year with the weather. Check recent photos or forecasts before you go.
